Evaluation of the Protective Effect of Methylsulfonylmethane in Esophagitis Induced by Alendronate in Rats

Abstract

Esophagitis is a term used to describe inflammation or damage to the esophageal lining. One of the factors that can contribute to this condition of esophageal injury is the use of medications such as alendronate. Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) has become a popular dietary supplement for a variety of purposes, including its common use as an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant agent. This study aims to investigate the protective effect of Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) against esophagitis induced by alendronate. 24 male albino rats were divided into three groups: (A) control; (B) alendronate 20 mg/kg/day for 4 days; (C) alendronate plus Methylsulfonylmethane 400 mg/kg/day for 4 days before alendronate administration. All the rats were sacrificed, and their esophagus was dissected for macroscopic and histological examination. The results of this study showed that macroscopic esophagus damage scores caused by the administration of alendronate significantly decreased by the administration of methylsulfonylmethane. In addition, administration of methylsulfonylmethane significantly decreased the histological lesions induced by alendronate. Statistical significance was observed when previous findings were compared to alendronate group (p<0.05). In conclusion administration of MSM at a dose of 400 mg/kg/day before administration of alendronate has protective efficacy against esophageal injury induced by alendronate in rats.
