Abstract

Pregnancy is a significant physiological and psychological transition that often exposes women to emotional challenges, particularly anxiety. Primigravida mothers are especially vulnerable to anxiety due to their lack of prior experience with pregnancy, childbirth, and parenting responsibilities. Antenatal anxiety has been associated with adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes, including prolonged labor, increased rates of cesarean delivery, preterm birth, low birth weight, postpartum depression, and impaired mother–infant bonding. Antenatal education has emerged as an effective non-pharmacological intervention aimed at enhancing maternal knowledge, self-confidence, coping abilities, and psychological well-being. This comprehensive review examines the effectiveness of antenatal education in reducing anxiety among primigravida mothers and highlights the role of nursing professionals in delivering educational interventions. Evidence from published studies, randomized controlled trials, systematic reviews, and nursing research indicates that structured antenatal education programs significantly improve maternal understanding of pregnancy, labor, childbirth, breastfeeding, newborn care, and stress management. These programs help reduce uncertainty, increase self-efficacy, strengthen coping mechanisms, and alleviate fear of childbirth, thereby contributing to lower anxiety levels. Furthermore, nurse-led educational initiatives provide emotional support, counseling, and guidance that enhance maternal preparedness and confidence. The review concludes that antenatal education is a valuable strategy for reducing anxiety among primigravida mothers and promoting positive maternal and neonatal outcomes. Integrating comprehensive antenatal education into routine maternal healthcare services can improve maternal mental health, strengthen childbirth experiences, and support healthier families.
