Medicinal Plant Trade and Market Development: A Supply Chain and Commerce Perspective on the Global Pharmacognosy Industry

Abstract

The global trade in medicinal plants and plant-derived natural products constitutes one of the oldest and most economically significant segments of international commerce, yet it remains among the least systematically studied from a supply chain and market development perspective. Valued at approximately USD 120 billion in 2023 and projected to reach USD 268 billion by 2032, the medicinal plant trade encompasses a vast and complex network of wild harvesters, small-scale farmers, primary collectors, processors, exporters, importers, wholesalers, and retail distributors operating across more than 120 countries. Despite this scale, the supply chains underpinning medicinal plant commerce are characterized by persistent structural inefficiencies including fragmented procurement, quality inconsistency, information asymmetry between producers and buyers, inadequate post-harvest handling infrastructure, and weak value chain integration between primary producers and end markets. This study investigates the supply chain structure, market development dynamics, and commerce strategies of the global medicinal plant trade through the lens of pharmacognosy and management science. A mixed-methods research design was employed, incorporating secondary trade data analysis from 30 major medicinal plant exporting and importing countries supplemented by primary survey data from 55 supply chain actors including collectors, processors, exporters, and institutional buyers. Findings reveal that value chain integration - the degree to which primary producers are connected to quality-assured, premium-price end markets - is the single strongest predictor of trade value realization, with integrated supply chain actors achieving 38.4% higher unit prices compared to fragmented chain participants. Quality certification, geographic indication protection, and digital traceability adoption emerged as the three most impactful market development interventions. The study proposes a Medicinal Plant Market Development Framework integrating supply chain governance, quality infrastructure, and market intelligence as the foundational pillars of sustainable trade value creation.
