Abstract

Background: Recovery following orthopedic interventions is influenced by numerous biological, physiological, and psychosocial factors. Increasing evidence indicates that biological sex contributes to differences in musculoskeletal anatomy, hormonal regulation, immune function, pain perception, bone metabolism, and rehabilitation outcomes. Despite these differences, standardized postoperative care often overlooks sex-specific considerations that may improve recovery and patient-centered nursing care. Understanding these variations is essential for developing individualized rehabilitation strategies and optimizing functional outcomes.

Objective: This review examines the influence of biological sex and sex-specific physiological factors on recovery after orthopedic interventions, emphasizing the role of nursing assessment, postoperative management, pain control, rehabilitation, and patient education.

Methods: A narrative review methodology was employed by evaluating recent peer-reviewed literature published in English from major biomedical databases. Studies investigating sex-related differences in orthopedic recovery, postoperative complications, rehabilitation outcomes, pain management, bone healing, and nursing interventions were critically analyzed and synthesized to identify clinically relevant findings.

Results: The reviewed evidence demonstrates that biological sex influences multiple aspects of orthopedic recovery. Hormonal differences affect bone remodeling and tissue healing, while variations in muscle mass, inflammatory responses, and pain sensitivity contribute to differences in functional recovery. Women may experience greater postoperative pain and a higher prevalence of osteoporosis-related complications, whereas men often demonstrate greater baseline muscle strength that may facilitate rehabilitation. Evidence also suggests that individualized nursing care, comprehensive patient education, early mobilization, nutritional support, and multidisciplinary rehabilitation improve recovery regardless of sex while addressing sex-specific needs.

Conclusion: Integrating sex-specific physiological considerations into orthopedic nursing practice supports personalized patient care, enhances rehabilitation outcomes, and may reduce postoperative complications. Future prospective studies are needed to strengthen evidence-based nursing guidelines and improve individualized orthopedic recovery pathways.
