Abstract

The effectiveness of academic staff in their research roles is demonstrated by their ability to publish in journals, collaborate with local and international scholars to solve emerging societal problems, write book chapters, and present conference papers, among other research-based activities. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between administrative strategies and the performance of lecturers in Colleges of Nursing in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. The study was guided by Hugo Münsterberg’s theory of industrial efficiency and adopted a descriptive research design. The instrument for data collection was a questionnaire titled "Administrative Strategies and Lecturers’ Job Performance Questionnaire (ASLJPQ)", developed by the researchers. The population comprised 16 Colleges of Nursing and 698 lecturers in the Niger Delta region. A stratified random sampling method was used to select 558 lecturers for the study. Simple linear regression (correlation) analysis was employed for data computation. For staff motivation strategies, the following correlation coefficients were obtained: teaching – 0.547, student assessment – 0.935, project supervision – 0.732, research – 0.615, and community service – 0.720. For staff appraisal strategies, the following coefficients were obtained: teaching – 0.429, student assessment – 0.881, project supervision – 0.588, research – 0.699, and community service – 0.619. Finally, for staff supervision strategies, the following coefficients were obtained: teaching – 0.658, student assessment – 0.918, project supervision – 0.594, research – 0.585, and community service – 0.560. It was concluded that the administrative strategies of heads of departments can determine the extent to which lecturers perform their functions in Colleges of Nursing in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria.
