Abstract

In the 2026 healthcare economy, the Medical-Surgical (Med-Surg) unit serves as the financial engine of the modern hospital. However, these units often face the highest rates of "operational friction," leading to increased costs and nurse burnout. This study investigates the application of Operations Management (OM) and Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) within the context of Med-Surgical nursing. By treating the nursing floor as a high-precision service delivery system, this research explores how standardizing "Work-in-Progress" (WIP) and optimizing resource allocation reduces the "Cost of Care" (CoC). Using a multi-site analysis of five surgical centers, the study identifies that management-integrated nursing protocols lead to a 19% reduction in post-operative complications and a significant increase in bed turnover velocity. The findings suggest that the commercial sustainability of inpatient care requires a paradigm shift, where Med-Surg nurses are empowered as both clinical experts and operational stewards of hospital capital.
