Abstract

Background: Diabetes is one of the major international health problems. In recent years, diabetes has become much more commonplace worldwide. Between 2000 and 2030, the number of people suffering from diabetes increased from 171 to 366 million. As people's lives change as they become less active and more obese, diabetes is a very severe disease in practically every country, and becomes more common and significant. It is common in those over 40 and is primarily brought on by being overweight and not exercising. Type 2 diabetes is associated with individuals whose lifestyles have changed, and it is more prevalent in metropolitan regions than in rural ones.
Objectives: The study's objectives were to determine the adult population's diabetes risk status and the efficacy of an awareness campaign about diabetes mellitus prevention and management at Bamboo bazar Mysuru.
Method: Research design adopted for the study, a pre-experimental one-group pre-test and post-test. 45 adults were chosen using the purposeful sampling technique. The MDRF-Indian diabetes risk score is used to evaluate risk status, while the structured knowledge questionnaire is used to gauge adults' understanding of diabetes mellitus treatment and prevention. Subject matter experts validated the tools. The MDRF-IDRS scale's adequacy was evaluated using construct validity, and the knowledge tool was used reliability was evaluated using the split half technique. Following an awareness training on diabetes mellitus management and prevention, each adult participated in a knowledge and risk assessment. Results: According to the examination of the data, most people had a medium risk of developing diabetes mellitus and had mediocre understanding of how to avoid and treat the condition. The "t" value, which was statistically significant at the 0.05 level of significance (t(44)=26.08; p<0.05), demonstrated that the awareness program on diabetes mellitus prevention and treatment was an effective technique to enhance knowledge of adults. The results showed that there is no significant relationship between adults' risk status and their level of knowledge. The results also showed that, with the exception of the family history of diabetes mellitus, there was no significant correlation between the knowledge levels and the chosen personal characteristics. Results also showed that there was no meaningful correlation between persons' risk status and their management
Conclusion: Adults' understanding of diabetes mellitus prevention and management was improved by the awareness program. The study's conclusions highlight how important it is for medical professionals to organize and carry out different educational initiatives to raise public awareness about diabetes mellitus.
