Abstract

Background: Dysmenorrhea is one of the most common gynaecological problems among adolescent girls and young women and is characterized by painful uterine cramps during menstruation. It adversely affects physical health, emotional well-being, academic performance, and quality of life. Among the various non-pharmacological interventions available for pain management, ginger tea and hot water bag application are commonly used because they are safe, inexpensive, and easily accessible. However, evidence comparing their effectiveness among nursing students remains limited. Aim: To assess and compare the effectiveness of Ginger Tea and Hot Water Bag Application in reducing dysmenorrhea pain intensity among nursing students of a selected nursing college in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. Methods: A quantitative evaluative research approach with a quasi-experimental pre-test–post-test design involving two experimental groups was adopted. Sixty nursing students with primary dysmenorrhea were selected using a non-probability purposive sampling technique and equally allocated into two groups (n = 30 each). Group I received Ginger Tea, whereas Group II received Hot Water Bag Application. Data were collected using a structured demographic questionnaire and a standardized pain assessment scale. Descriptive statistics (frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation) and inferential statistics (paired t-test, independent t-test, and Chi-square test) were used for data analysis. A p-value of <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Among the 60 participants, baseline pain intensity was comparable between both groups. The paired t-test showed that the Ginger Tea group did not demonstrate a statistically significant reduction in dysmenorrhea pain intensity (mean difference = −0.417, t = −0.316, p = 0.753). In contrast, the Hot Water Bag Application group showed a statistically significant reduction in pain intensity (mean difference = 1.067, t = 4.403, p < 0.001). Comparative findings indicated that Hot Water Bag Application was more effective than Ginger Tea in reducing dysmenorrhea pain among nursing students. Conclusion: Hot Water Bag Application was found to be significantly more effective than Ginger Tea in reducing dysmenorrhea pain intensity among nursing students. Being simple, safe, inexpensive, and non-invasive, it may be recommended as an effective non-pharmacological intervention for the management of primary dysmenorrhea.
