Abstract

Postoperative complications remain a significant challenge in modern healthcare systems despite remarkable advances in surgical techniques and perioperative management. Artificial Intelligence (AI) and predictive analytics have emerged as innovative technologies capable of transforming postoperative care by enabling early detection of complications, individualized treatment planning, and data-driven clinical decision-making. Medical-surgical nurses, who provide continuous monitoring and comprehensive patient care, are uniquely positioned to integrate these technologies into clinical practice. This review article examines the role of artificial intelligence and predictive analytics in postoperative care, their applications, benefits, challenges, ethical concerns, and future implications for medical-surgical nursing. Evidence suggests that AI-assisted postoperative care can improve patient safety, reduce hospital readmissions, optimize resource utilization, and support personalized nursing interventions. However, successful implementation requires adequate infrastructure, professional training, ethical governance, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
