Digital Reels and Preschool Attention: Maternal Perceptions in Rural India

Abstract
Background of Study: The rapid expansion of digital technology has transformed how even very young children consume media, with short‑form video platforms such as Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts becoming widely accessible in rural as well as urban settings. Early childhood, particularly ages 3–5, is a critical stage for developing attention, self‑regulation, and foundational learning skills, yet the fast‑paced, highly stimulating nature of reels may foster dependency‑like behaviors and shorten attention cycles. In rural villages of Varanasi, increasing smartphone penetration and limited parental awareness have heightened concerns about preschoolers’ exposure to such content. Mothers, as primary caregivers, are uniquely positioned to observe behavioral changes, making their perceptions vital for understanding how reel consumption influences children’s routines, play, and social interaction. This study therefore seeks to assess maternal perspectives on the impact of short‑form video exposure on preschoolers’ attention span and addiction‑like behaviors, aiming to provide evidence for parental guidance and community‑level interventions.
Methodology: The study adopted a quantitative, descriptive cross‑sectional design to assess maternal perceptions of short‑form video exposure among preschoolers aged 3–5 years in selected villages of Varanasi. A sample of 100 mothers was selected using non‑probability convenient sampling, and data were collected through a structured questionnaire and interview schedule comprising demographic information, reel exposure checklist, attention span assessment, and the Problematic Media Use Measure–Short Form (PMUM‑SF). Content validity was established through expert review, and reliability was confirmed via pilot testing (Cronbach’s α = 0.82–0.84). Ethical clearance was obtained, and informed consent was secured from all participants. Data were analyzed using SPSS, employing descriptive statistics for demographic and exposure patterns, Chi‑square tests for associations, and Pearson’s correlation coefficient to examine relationships between reel exposure and attention outcomes, with significance set at p < 0.05.
Results: Findings revealed that 90% of children exhibited problematic screen use, with 52% in the moderate category and 38% in the high category. Attention difficulties were prevalent in 95% of children, with only 5% demonstrating a good attention span. Significant associations were found between maternal smartphone use (χ² = 29.466, p < 0.001), home Wi-Fi availability (χ² = 9.712, p = 0.008), and child outcomes. A strong positive correlation (r = 0.851, p < 0.001) confirmed that higher screen use was strongly linked to greater attention difficulties.
Conclusion: The study validates the hypothesis that greater daily exposure to addictive reels is associated with reduced attention span in preschoolers. Maternal smartphone behavior and household internet access emerged as critical determinants of child outcomes. These findings highlight the urgent need for parental guidance, nursing-led interventions, and community-level awareness programs to safeguard early childhood development in the digital age.
